As the summer holidays draw
to a close what better way to fight the blues
than a slap up meal at your local. If you’ve
been away this summer and enjoyed a little global
cuisine then why not stop by and tell us what
you enjoyed eating and who knows it may end
up on the menu.
Now
for those of you who don’t know, The
Victoria and Chef Paul Merrett have been
appearing on BBC2 each week in a series
called Economy Gastronomy. The programme
airs every Wednesday at 8pm however if that’s
not a good time for you then try this link
to the
BBC Iplayer.
The book that accompanies the series is currently
at number 1 in the book charts so if you fancy
a read pop up to The Victoria where we now
have signed copies available.
Our
new wine list is now in full swing –
we have some stonking additions in every
price bracket as well as more wines by the
glass than ever before. By the way all our
front of house team receives regular training
so do ask a member of staff to assist you
in your choice. Our wine list can be viewed
by clcking
here.
Don’t
forget we don’t only sell wine! Our
public bar is open all day from 8.30am.
We kick off each day with teas and coffees,
freshly squeezed juices and smoothies with
a breakfast food menu available too.
From
lunch time we serve a bar food menu right
through the day with a variety of choices
from bar snacks to sandwiches to hot food.
We have a good variety of beers on tap from
extra chilled European lagers to classic
English ales.
Finally
a word about Christmas! I know, I know it’s
only September but last year we were fully
sold out for Christmas lunch, Boxing Day
and New Years Eve and this meant an unlucky
few who could not get a table.
This
year we are open for Christmas once again
so book now and avoid disappointment. Our
full Christmas and New Year itinerary will
be posted on the website very soon.
Notes
from the Kitchen
I
enjoyed 6 days in Italy during August. Italian
food is defined by its simplicity. The raw
ingredients available at every village market
put our farmers markets to shame! They have
some pretty amazing restaurants too –
my favourite style of Italian eatery is
the Agri-tourismo. This is a normally a
rural farmhouse converted into a humble
restaurant where mum and granny knock up
the pasta whilst dad serves the wine and
food.
I
always come back heavily inspired by the
food I’ve enjoyed on holiday and this
year is no exception – our menu has
recently featured various pasta dishes,
home made focaccia and a really wacky risotto
with fresh melon and peppercorns (sounds
mad but it works!)
On
the dessert front things are also seasonally inspired.
Strawberries, gooseberries, blackberries and figs
are all featuring this month.
Back
at the ranch operations were ably overseen by
my number two in the kitchen Chris Marriott. Anyone
who reads the Economy Gastronomy cookbook will
know what a star of the stoves my kiwi colleague
is.……
Ingredients
wise, the best of British is just beginning to
nod towards Autumn. Strawberries are replaced
by blackberries, wild mushrooms are available
once again and best of all the game season is
about to kick in.
Even
as Autumn approaches our al fresco kitchen is
still up and running so if you feel the need for
a truly handsome home made beef burger or its
sexy vegetarian cousin then high tail it to The
Victoria on a Wednesday, Saturday lunch or Sunday
evening – by the way if burgers aren’t
your thing check out our outdoor
menus for an equally tasty alternative.
We will run the outdoor grill until the weather
forces us back in doors!
By
the way just in case you have not had your fill
of TV cookery – I have just finished a series
which goes in search of the very best family food
this country has to offer. The series airs in
October so if you fancy yourself as a bit of a
champion home cook then tune in and check out
the competition!
