Tucked away in the leafy recesses
of Sheen, the Victoria is, in essence, much like its surroundings
- stylish, tranquil and idyllically pretty. Run by renowned
restaurateur Greg Bellamy and critically acclaimed chef
Paul Merrett, whose career path leaves a trail of Michelin
starred in its wake, this heavenly match was bound to deliver
a dining experience that is nothing short of divine.
Set in an airy timber-framed conservatory, the main dining
room looks out over a pretty garden terrace providing the
perfect spot for enjoying lobster or ribeye al fresco from
the outdoor grill, or just a couple of drinks as the sun
goes down. A muted yet classy décor appropriately
sets the scene for the menu, which bears forth a satisfying
variety of delicious modern European-style creations.
Gazpacho with Marcona almonds and Nunez de Prado olive
oil is authentically tart and fresh while potted foie gras
and chicken liver parfait with sauternes raisin jelly and
red onion jam yields a delectable creaminess and richness
against the crispy crunch of toasted homemade granary bread.
Main dishes span all kinds of fish, fowl, and fauna as well
as offering a sumptuous fresh vegetarian option; succulent
steamed fillet of seabass on orzo pasta with juicy Palourde
clams is served with braised fennel in a rich roasted fish
broth, while lamb loin persillade is tasty and tender accompanied
by a plump merguez sausage, kofta skewer and beautifully
spiced Imam Biyaldi with crisp pitta. And whether a gourmet
or gourmand, be sure to discover for yourself why the Victoria’s
thrice cooked chips have garnered themselves such a great
reputation amongst locals.
For the finale, buttermilk panna cotta with ripe strawberries,
strawberry sorbet and shortbread offers an interesting twist
on a classic summer treat, while chocolate and peanut brownie
cookies drizzled with white chocolate sauce and served with
a generous scoop of peanut butter ice cream is admittedly
naughty but oh-so-nice.
Seven stylish hotel rooms with Egyptian cotton-clad queen
size beds, fluffy white towels and complimentary Neutrogena
toiletries also make this the perfect serene evening retreat
when visiting the capital, being just a quick commute from
the city and the West End. Whether seeking refreshment after
a stroll around Richmond Park or wanting to make a long
weekend out of it, a visit to the Victoria is a truly luxurious
treat.
