Nestled in an affluent residential
area in leafy south west London, The Victoria is a hidden
gem it is a pleasure to stumble upon.
Having enjoyed a drink in the bar, a cosy room with the
friendly feel of an old country pub, we were led to the
restaurant - an adjoining conservatory.
But while it may look more like a wedding reception venue
than a Michelin-starred restaurant, there's nothing tacky
about this fine-dining offering from TV chef Paul Merrett.
The menu is limited, with a choice of just six main dishes,
and there is just one vegetarian option for each course.
We decided on sharing the Mezze as a starter. A generous
portion of fresh bread, deliciously tangy olives and a variety
of dips including a creamy baba ganoush were presented beautifully
alongside several pieces of tender chicken and a salsa of
peppers and tomatoes.
Although there is not much choice for main courses, the
dishes that are on offer are varied and interesting. I plumped
for the green veg risotto which was cooked to perfection
with asparagus, peas and plenty of parmesan. The portion
was substantial but with such fresh flavours in a dish,
not finishing was not an option.
My partner opted for the sea bream on a bed of rice and
mini pasta. The fish was finely cooked and seasoned just
enough to compliment the wonderful natural flavour of the
meat.
To accompany our meal we were recommended a Rioja. The
wine selection is impressive, having been hand-picked by
jolly TV expert Olly Smith, and the staff are knowledgeable
and helpful, on hand to offer advice on which is best enjoyed
with a particular dish.
Having sat down in a near-empty restaurant, within an hour
the room was heaving and full of lively chatter. The atmosphere
is airy and light and you can see why it appeals to regulars,
many seemed to be on first name terms with the serving staff.
After the meal, which was polished off with a disgustingly
rich chocolate brownie, we retired once again to the adjoining
bar area. It is refreshing to be able to enjoy such fine
food then relax in such a comfortable bar instead of being
thrust back under neon lights and perched on a three foot
stool. The pub is what is says on the tin, a pub, and having
eaten far too much, and drunk about the same, it was heaven
to lie back and be swallowed up by the enormous engulfing
sofas.
Having spent the evening at The Victoria I would recommend
it as an excellent place to dine and also a lovely place
to pop in for a pint. Just a stones throw from Richmond
Park it boasts a large garden and is family friendly. The
only quibble was the lack of choice but the rest of our
experience at The Victoria more than made up for this.
Prices: Around £6-8 for a starter, £10-18 for
a main course and £6 per dessert. Extensive wine list
ranging from budget to Bolly.
